Nate's 2-month Check Up

Thursday, December 8. 2011
Nate had his 2-month check up. Due to some insurance changes, we had to change doctors for the kids. It's OK. I know some really good ones, but we'll miss Dr. Thomas. He was 75th%ile for weight, 25th%ile for length, and 50th%ile for head circumference, so he's getting plenty to eat. The rest of his check up was good, too. Seth and Ruth came with me and entertained everyone. One of the other doctors even gave them coins for their piggy banks and some candy to eat while we waited for shots. Nate took his shots well, with just a few minutes of crying. And he's still smiling at me, especially when he has a full belly.

Newborn Visit

Thursday, September 29. 2011
Nate had his first well child check on Tuesday. We saw Dr. Scott Keller who works at my office. Nate weighed 6 lbs 13 oz before we left the hospital, and in clinic he was 6 lbs 15 oz (14th percentile). His length was 19.5 inches (33rd percentile). Like all of our children, he had developed some jaundice, so I had to take him to the lab to have his bilirubin checked. The poor kid screamed the whole time, but he recovered well afterward. Thankfully, no shots this time.

Introducing Nate!

Thursday, September 29. 2011
We are very happy to welcome Nathaniel Richard Williston to our family. He was born on Friday, September 23, 2011, at 6:44 pm measuring 7 lbs 3 oz and 20 inches long. My water broke at around 1:40 pm while I was at work, and things went pretty quickly after that. My doctor was out-of-town, so we were honored to have Dr. Carol Howard deliver Nate on her own birthday.

We are now home and recovering well. Tim pointed out that it's a little unusual that having a newborn is actually slowing down for us. Our lives have been too crazy! We still have lots to do, but at least I'm not pregnant and working all the time.

The kids love their new brother. Seth enjoys kissing him and singing lullabies to him when he cries. He tells everyone he can about his new brother and does a happy dance. As always, he is happy to have Mom home more often for a few weeks. Ruth likes to touch him, poke him, and pat him as well as tell me when he's crying and bring his pacifier. She has made up a song about him all on her own: "The baby, the baby, the baby, his name is Nate!" Ruth has also asked me why my belly is still so big. Zeke lights up when he talks about the baby and likes to share his pacifier and blanket. He also tells me when the baby is crying and helps me get diapers. Zeke and Ruth both like to stare at him and ask lots of questions.

Casanova

Sunday, February 27. 2011
Seth has become a Casanova of sorts. He frequently tells people, especially females it seems to me, that he loves them, and he showers everyone he knows with hugs and kisses, often to excess. He has always been affectionate, and we have encouraged this, but he seems to have taken it to a new level. I'm trying to decide where to draw the line.

Cruisin' to Mexico

Sunday, February 13. 2011
While Tulsa was experiencing Snowpocalypse of 2011, we traveled down to Texas to embark on our first ever cruise. We were in Oklahoma for the first 14 inches, which made our exit from the state challenging, but it also allowed an early departure since work was closed. Of course, Texas had some severe weather, including 7-8 more inches the morning we left the grandparents' to head to Galveston. We managed to make a 6-hour trip in 9 hours! With 3 active kids in the car! After spending the night in a hotel, we got ready for boarding, which was also interesting with 3 active, young children and all the requisite luggage in tow. We finally made it onto the "big boat" and started exploring. I commented quite a few times on the trip that we were either brave or foolish depending on the perspective.

Seth and Ruth both attended childcare at Camp Carnival at intervals during the day, but there was very little official childcare for Zeke. Thanks to Tim's brilliance, we invited an old friend and a new friend to come with us to help. It was wonderful to have a few kid-free hours each day to actually relax. Thanks, Krista and Becky! But it was great to have the kids with us and see them experience all the new things.

One port day was in Progreso, Mexico. We put all 3 kids in childcare and headed into town by ourselves. We did our own thing, shopping and hanging out on the public beach. I even got to impress Tim by bartering in my (very rudimentary) Spanish. The childcare was only available for a short time, so we couldn't do any of the cool things like Chichen Itza, but it was nice to just have some time for the two of us.

The other port day was in Cozumel. We took the whole family this time and did an official cruise excursion. The kids had fun playing in the sand and the pool. It was too cold for ocean swimming. (For us, anyway. I think we saw some yanks out there.) On the way back we enjoyed some Mariachi music.

The boat was lots of fun, too. Seth had an introduction to miniature golf, which he now loves. He played about 5 rounds a day and invented a move called the "longee zoggee". I think it's sort of like an expanded Mulligan and involves picking up the ball, bouncing it on some rocks, logs, etc., and then dropping it into the cup. It can be used anytime your ball bounces off of something when you hit it, at least according to Seth. There were also water slides that our kids loved. Rumor has it that the Ecstasy (our boat) will be replaced in September with the Magic, which has even more amazing things on it and is even bigger.

One of Tim and my favorite times were the dinners. Our friends watched Zeke and sometimes Ruth so that we could enjoy it alone. We had wonderful servers from the Philippines who took great care of us. At a couple of the dinners, all the servers entertained us with song and dance. Otherwise for breakfast and lunch, we mostly ate at the family-style buffet with our very loud and boisterous children. The food was plentiful and pretty good for the most part. The kids absolutely loved finding towel animals created by our room steward each evening with our turn-down service.

I think that debarking was worse than boarding, just because we were already tired and we had to wait a LONG time in a dark lounge with nothing for kids to do, but Seth made new friends on the shuttle bus back to our car. We survived and headed back to the grandparents' to stay another night before heading home. It was nice to see the Livingston cousins the next morning before we took off.

There are pics and video on FB, so check it out!

Ruthie's 3rd Birthday

Tuesday, February 1. 2011
It's hard to believe that Ruth is 3 already. The Friday before her birthday, we went to Chuck E. Cheese. Saturday we had a princess party for her, complete with princess balloons, cupcakes, cups, plates, and napkins. She had a great time! Sunday we had another get together with a few family members who couldn't be at her party. She had another cake and strawberries with whipped cream. After all that, her actual birthday was a little anti-climactic, but we did try hard to make her feel special that day. Pics are on Facebook.

Ball

Tuesday, November 9. 2010

To recap Zeke's language development, his first word was, "Mama", my first child to say my name first.  Then came Dada, then uh-oh.  Yesterday, I realized he was saying, "ball".  It sounds more like, "Baa, baa", but it's clear he's saying ball and knows just what it means.  This doesn't count the sign language, which so far includes milk, more, and eat.  Today, he has run around the house looking for every ball he can find to practice his new word.  This puts him light years ahead of Seth in the language department at this age.

Fall Fun

Sunday, October 31. 2010

Thursday was costume day at preschool.  The kids went there in their costumes, and they had a parade.  Tim got some video and pics which he should be posting soon to Facebook.  I guess Seth wouldn't take his costume off after the parade, so he wore it all day.

On Friday, we went to a local pumpkin patch where the kids had a great time.  Ruthie kept referring to the pumpkins as apples.  Seth's favorite was the "dark house", which was a very dark path made of stacked up hay bales that were covered.  We also went through the "cane maze" cut through very tall sugar canes.  Finally, Seth and Ruth rode the ponies, which they loved.  Ruth cried when she had to get off.

Tonight we went to Grammy and Grampy's where Aunt Cori, Uncle Andrew, Uncle Aaron, and Carder were waiting.  After dinner, we got the kids back into their costumes and took all of them out trick-or-treating.  Everywhere we went, people said, "Hello, Mario."  Of course, we thought Ruthie was the cutest princess ever.  Zeke wore Seth's lion costume from when he was that age.  Carder was very cute in his martial arts outfit.  The kids had a great time and got lots of loot.  The three older ones were very polite, saying thank you at each house.  We sure missed Aunt Guenevere and Cody and hope they had a restful time at home.

Big Boy Prayer

Wednesday, October 27. 2010

Last night I was getting the kids ready for bed, and Seth was aggravating Ruthie, as he had been on and off throughout the evening.  I've been reading Shepherding a Child's Heart, so I decided to try to apply it to that situation.  I spoke with Seth about being kind to his sister and how that would make me proud and would please God.  He said that he wanted to do that, so I asked him if he would like to pray for help.  He prayed the sweetest little prayer, first thanking God for the day and for his family and then asking for help being nice to his sister and doing big boy things.  I was so proud of him at that moment, and the miraculous thing was that the rest of the night, he was kind to Ruthie, even when I wasn't present (or he didn't think I was).  That's all the proof I need that prayer works!

Big Boy Bed

Tuesday, October 26. 2010

I guess Zeke is officially no longer a baby now that he is sleeping in his big boy bed.  We had tried making the transition a few weeks ago, but it didn't work at that point.  This time we have him basically barricaded in, so that helps.  There are certainly some down sides to having kids in the same room, but I hope that it will be valuable in the long-run, and it frees up a room for other uses.

Uh-oh

Saturday, October 23. 2010
We think it may be significant that Zeke's first word (other than Mama and Dada) is, "Uh-oh."  Especially since that is the word we use when the kids have done something naughty.  Supposedly if we sing-song that word or something similar, it will keep us calm.  It is sometimes effective in that regard, but at least it communicates to the kids that they'd better stop what they're doing.  It is also interesting that Ruthie has now started sending her baby dolls to the corner/time out (it didn't work when she tried it on Seth and Zeke).  Hmmm, what's next?

Birthday Party Saturday

Sunday, October 17. 2010

This weekend we traveled to Texas.  We spent the night at Grandma and Grandpa's on Friday, which the kids always love.  Saturday morning we played at Grandma and Grandpa's until it was time to head to Tim and Anna's for Abby's birthday party.  The kids bounced in the bounce house and ran around playing with anything they could find.  Zeke was ecstatic to have so much freedom to roam in and out of the house and all around.  There was a rice crispy treat cake that was decorated beautifully by Anna, and the kids got to take home swords, shields, and a crown and scepter/wand.

The biggest reason for the trip was to celebrate Grandma's birthday.  She had no idea that we had all planned to go out for dinner and had even invited some of her friends.  Somehow, everyone kept the secret, and we even pulled off the ruse of having Abby invite everyone to dinner.  Grandma thought it was all spur-of-the-moment and even adjusted the time to help us get home sooner.  She had no idea that it would make her friends "late", but that's OK.  We all enjoyed a yummy Italian dinner and the had the carrot cupcakes made by Anna.  John had bought balloons earlier during his shopping trip, which graced Grandma's chair.

We got back late, but not too late, thanks to Grandma!

Fair Weather

Friday, October 8. 2010

It's fair time again, and again, we packed up the kids and braved the crowds.  In the past, we've tried to go during "off" times like Sunday afternoon, but this year, the only time that really worked was Friday night.  I had heard rumors of how busy it was this year, maybe because of the nice weather, so I was somewhat apprehensive.  And I couldn't help but remember the total meltdown last year with Seth basically screaming and kicking before we could get away.  This year was much better!

We headed for the petting zoo first, which the kids loved as always.  They were able to feed quite a few animals and avoided all serious injury.  Surprisingly, none of them wanted to ride the ponies (or camels), which they loved last year.  Then we went into the kids' building, which I think was better than ever.  Seth played in a bounce house maze for a while, and Ruth and Zeke rode the Little Tikes cars.  Then Seth came in and played in the ball pit/tunnel/slide thing that we had to pay for last year.  We were very happy that it was free!  Seth and Ruth also had fun playing in the huge sand box before we ate some food.

Next we headed into the big building where the kids had a great time playing on the playset, seeing the ambulance, and eating cotton candy.  Amazingly, Seth remembered in great detail what we did at the fair last year and wanted to make sure to do the same things this year.  We saw several people we know and chatted a little.  Ruthie left her water cup in a shed, so we had to trek all the way across the big building to get it back, but at least it was still there.  After all that, when it was time to go, there were no protests from anyone about leaving, and everyone was ready to fall asleep quickly back at home.

Beach Trip

Tuesday, September 28. 2010

I am way behind on posting, but a couple weeks ago we went to Galveston for some R&R on the beach.  It was great!  We had a beach house that had plenty of room for us.  There were only 2 bedrooms, but there was a little extra room that could be closed off with a temporary wall where Zeke slept.  It was so nice to be able to cook for ourselves if we wanted and have some privacy.  We never had to worry if our kids were keeping anyone else up.

The ocean was much more shallow and calm than beaches we've been to before.  The kids all loved the water and sand.  Zeke would run out into the water fearlessly and didn't mind when he fell in face first.  Seth had fun riding the waves with Dada and building sand castles.  Ruth mainly enjoyed beach combing for shells.

We planned a fairly good mix of time at home and various activities.  For instance, one day we went to Moody Gardens.  We made sure to try out some of the local seafood restaurants and had some great recommendations!  We had a GI bug make the rounds, but it lasted for less than a day for each of us, so it wasn't too bad.

While we were there, Seth insisted that we call the beach house home and wanted to stay there forever.  Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back!

Charts-R-Us

Tuesday, August 17. 2010

We've been having some potty issues with Seth lately.  I don't know if it's regression, distraction, testing boundaries, or what, but we are trying to figure out how to get him to stop wetting himself.  We've had to put him back in Pull-Ups to save our furniture.  Anyway, we talked to him about making a potty chart with stickers, and if he can go 4 days without wetting his Pull-Up during the day, he can go back to wearing big-kid underpants.  He was very excited about this idea and told us to go and buy him a chart at Charts-R-Us!
